What is the Walmart HireVue interview like?
Walmart uses two HireVue tools. Hourly store applicants take the Retail Associate Assessment. Walmart built it with Modern Hire, and HireVue bought Modern Hire in 2023. It is a job simulation that shows a day in the life of a store associate. Modern Hire says Walmart used it to hire 400,000 new associates in four months in 2020.
The recorded video interview shows up for corporate roles. Candidates report it for Walmart Connect sales, merchant, and finance development program roles. Walmart Connect candidates report 5 to 7 questions, and some had unlimited re-records. Walmart's values are act with integrity, respect the individual, serve our customers and members, and strive for excellence. This page has the reported questions, what each one tests, and a worked answer.

What does a strong Walmart HireVue answer sound like?
Question: "How do you learn new things?"
"Last spring I took a part-time job helping a small bike shop with its online ads. I had never run an ad, and the owner wanted results in a month. First, I took the free training course from the ad platform. It took about six hours over two weekends. Then I set one small goal: get more people to book a tune-up. I ran two versions of the same ad for a week each and kept a simple sheet of clicks and bookings. The second ad, with the price in the headline, got about twice the bookings. By the end of the month, tune-up bookings went from about 20 to 31. So the way I learn is to take a short course, try something small, measure it, and keep what works."
Why it scores: A real skill learned from zero, a clear method, and a number at the end. It also shows strive for excellence: speed with attention to detail. About 55 seconds spoken.
How do you prepare for the Walmart HireVue in three days?
Specific to Walmart:
- Check which step you got. The Retail Associate Assessment is for hourly store roles and walks you through scenes from a day on the job. The recorded video interview is for corporate roles.
- For Walmart Connect, have a clear answer to "why sales" and one story where you moved a number for a customer or a team.
- If your invite allows re-records, use them, but set a limit for yourself. A clear second take is better than a stiff fifth take.
For any HireVue:
- Day 1. Write one story per competency in the list above. Two or three sentences each: the situation, what you decided, what happened.
- Day 2. Say each story out loud on a two-minute timer. Most people run long the first time. Cut until each one ends on the result with time to spare.
- Day 3. Run the reported questions cold, in one sitting, no notes. Then set up the room: quiet, camera at eye level, light on your face, wired internet if you have it.
The full setup checklist and a five-day version of this plan are in the free HireVue practice guide.
After you submit, results often take a week or more. Here is how to follow up after an interview if the window passes, and a salary negotiation email for when the offer comes. Applying for a move up where you already work? See promotion interview questions.
