What the Deutsche Bank HireVue looks like
Deutsche Bank uses a HireVue video interview for its graduate and internship programs. Candidates report 4 to 6 questions with 30 seconds to think and up to 2 minutes to answer. Scored questions cannot be re-recorded.
The bank publishes its values, and the reported questions lean on client centricity, discipline, and partnership. Expect at least one question on working with people who see things differently. This page has the questions, what each tests, and a worked answer.
| Questions | 4 to 6 |
|---|---|
| Time to think | 30 seconds |
| Time to answer | up to 2 minutes |
| Retakes | none on the scored questions |
| When it comes | after the application and online tests, before the live rounds |
| Who gets it | graduate and internship programs across investment banking, corporate banking, and technology |
What candidates report for early-career screens. Deutsche Bank can change the bank by role and by year.
The clock and the format are the same HireVue product every employer uses. The timing guide covers what happens when the timer runs out, and how HireVue scoring works covers what the recording is scored on.
What Deutsche Bank is screening for
Deutsche Bank's stated values are integrity, sustainable performance, client centricity, innovation, discipline, and partnership. The reported questions cover the last four most often.
- Client centricity. A time you understood and served what someone actually needed.
- Discipline. Careful, complete work under a deadline.
- Partnership. Making a group work when it was not working.
- Innovation. A better way you found and put in place.
- Motivation for the bank. A reason tied to a specific business and its work.
Build one story for each line above. Every question below is asking for one of them.
Deutsche Bank HireVue questions candidates report
These are the questions candidates report from recent Deutsche Bank screens, with the competency each one is built to test. Your set will be a mix of these and close variants.
- Tell me about a time you worked in a team that was not working well. What did you do? (Partnership)
- Why Deutsche Bank, and why this division? (Motivation)
- Describe a time you found a better way to do something and got others to adopt it. (Innovation, influence)
- Tell me about a time you had to be very careful with details under time pressure. (Discipline)
- Describe a time you understood what a customer or stakeholder needed before they asked. (Client centricity)
- Tell me about a time you disagreed with a decision. What did you do? (Integrity, judgment)
For the shape of each answer type, see HireVue interview questions by format. For the answer structure itself, the STAR method guide has worked examples.
A worked answer, timed to the clock
Question: "Tell me about a time you worked in a team that was not working well. What did you do?"
"In a second-year finance project, our group of five had two people doing all the work by week three and three people waiting to be told what to do. I was one of the two. Instead of working harder, I put the deliverable on a whiteboard as six pieces and asked each person to pick one and say when they would have it. That changed two things. Everyone had a piece with their name on it, and the deadline was theirs, not mine. Four of the six pieces came in on time. I paired with the one person who was late and we finished his overnight. We got the highest mark in the section. The fix was not effort. It was making the work visible and owned."
Why it scores: A common team failure, one concrete intervention, an honest result including the part that still needed rescue. About 70 seconds spoken.
How to prepare for the Deutsche Bank HireVue in three days
Specific to Deutsche Bank:
- Prepare a detail-under-pressure story. Deutsche Bank asks about discipline more than most banks.
- If you applied to a technology track, have a project you built ready to describe in plain terms.
- Name the division in your "why" answer and tie it to work the bank has actually done.
For any HireVue:
- Day 1. Write one story per competency in the list above. Two or three sentences each: the situation, what you decided, what happened.
- Day 2. Say each story out loud on a two-minute timer. Most people run long the first time. Cut until each one ends on the result with time to spare.
- Day 3. Run the reported questions cold, in one sitting, no notes. Then set up the room: quiet, camera at eye level, light on your face, wired internet if you have it.
The full setup checklist and a five-day version of this plan are in the main HireVue guide.
