How Long Does a HireVue Interview Take?

20 to 30 minutes for a standard screen: 3 to 8 questions, 30 seconds of prep each, 1 to 3 minutes per answer. Here is the per-question clock, the typical length by screen type, and how to budget a 90-second answer so the result never gets cut off.

The short answer

A HireVue interview typically takes 20 to 30 minutes: 3 to 8 questions, about 30 seconds of prep per question, and 1 to 3 minutes of recording per answer. Internship and entry-level screens often run shorter, around 15 to 20 minutes with 3 to 5 questions. Screens that bundle game-based assessments or a coding challenge run longer; budget 45 to 60 minutes for a combined invite.

The employer sets every number: question count, prep seconds, answer limit, and retakes. Your invite email or the interview landing screen states the configured limits before you start, so read it before you press begin.

The per-question clock, minute by minute

  1. Question appears (0:00). The question shows as text on screen, sometimes with a short video of it being read.
  2. Prep countdown (usually 30 seconds). A visible not-recording indicator is on. No video or audio is captured during prep. Use it to say your STAR beats out loud, not to write a script.
  3. Recording starts automatically. When the prep countdown hits zero, recording begins whether you are ready or not. This surprises more candidates than any other part of the format.
  4. Answer window (1 to 3 minutes). You can usually submit early once you finish. An answer that fills 75 to 90 seconds of a 2-minute window reads as complete; stretching to fill the clock reads as padding.
  5. Next question. No break timer between questions on most configurations, so treat the whole session as one sitting.

The deadline is separate from the duration: most invites give you 3 to 7 days to complete the screen, and the link expires at the stated time in the invite email. Late completions are treated as non-completions by most employers.

Typical length by screen type

  • Internship / entry-level video screen: 3 to 5 questions, 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Standard behavioral video screen: 5 to 8 questions, 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Video + game-based assessments: add 15 to 25 minutes for the games (each runs 20 to 60 seconds, but the set is long).
  • Video + CodeVue coding challenge: add 30 to 60 minutes for 1 to 3 timed problems.
  • Virtual job tryout: 30 to 45 minutes of role-simulation scenarios, sometimes standalone.

The invite email states which formats your screen includes. If it says "games and video," plan for the longer sitting; splitting formats across days is usually allowed only if the invite explicitly says so.

Managing the clock inside an answer

The timing failure pattern is consistent: candidates spend 60 seconds on the situation and run out of clock before the result. The fix is a beat budget. For a 2-minute window aim at 15 seconds of situation, 10 of task, 45 of action, 20 of result, which lands the answer at about 90 seconds with room to close.

Rehearse against a strict timer, not against your sense of time. Most people discover their spoken answers run 40 percent longer than the same answer rehearsed silently. Three timed takes per story is usually enough to fix it; the full HireVue guide has the 5-day plan that builds this in.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a HireVue interview take?

Typically 20 to 30 minutes: 3 to 8 questions, about 30 seconds of prep each, and 1 to 3 minutes of recording per answer. Internship and entry-level screens often run 15 to 20 minutes. Add 15 to 60 minutes if the invite bundles games or a coding challenge.

How much prep time do you get per question?

Usually 30 seconds, set by the employer. Nothing is recorded during the prep countdown; recording starts automatically when it ends.

Can you pause a HireVue interview?

Not mid-question. Once the prep countdown starts, the question runs to completion. Between questions there is no formal pause button on most configurations, so plan to finish the sitting once you start.

How long do you have to complete a HireVue after receiving the link?

Most invites allow 3 to 7 days, stated in the email. The link expires at the deadline, and late completions are typically treated as non-completions. If you have a conflict, ask the recruiter for an extension before the deadline passes.

Should you use the whole answer window?

No. An answer that covers situation, action, and result in 75 to 90 seconds of a 2-minute window scores better than one stretched to fill the clock. Submit early once the story is complete.
