What is the Vodafone HireVue interview like?
Vodafone uses a HireVue video interview for its graduate programmes and apprenticeships. Candidates report 3 to 5 questions, with 1 to 2 minutes to think and 2 to 3 minutes to answer. There is a practice question first and no retakes on the assessed ones. The whole session takes about 20 minutes.
Vodafone pairs the video with a reasoning game that asks you to spot patterns in shapes. Vodafone says the recordings are reviewed later by its recruitment team, and that the questions may cover why you want the role, your strengths and development areas, and how you handled problems. This page lists the questions candidates report, what each tests, and a worked answer.
| Questions | 3 to 5 |
|---|---|
| Time to think | 1 to 2 minutes |
| Time to answer | 2 to 3 minutes |
| Retakes | none on the assessed questions; one practice question first |
| When it comes | after the application, in the same online step as a reasoning game, before the assessment centre |
| Who gets it | graduate programmes and apprenticeships, mainly in the UK |

What does Vodafone look for in a HireVue interview?
The Spirit of Vodafone names four behaviours: earn customer loyalty, create the future, experiment and learn fast, and get it done together. The reported questions test experiment and learn fast and get it done together most often.
- Learning fast. A skill or tool you taught yourself, and how you knew you needed it.
- Teamwork. A group result where you name what you did to help.
- Drive. A hard goal you set yourself and the steps you took to reach it.
- Problem solving. A messy problem broken into steps, with the fix.
- Motivation for Vodafone. A reason for Vodafone and the programme that is about the work you would do.
Build one story for each line above. Every question below is asking for one of them.

What does a strong Vodafone HireVue answer sound like?
Question: "Describe a recent time you took the initiative to learn a new skill, topic, or technology. How did you know you needed it, and what steps did you take?"
"Last autumn I joined a student team building a budgeting app for a class project. Two weeks in, the only member who knew databases dropped the course. Nobody else could fix the bugs in how we stored user data, so I knew I had to learn it. I gave myself ten days. I picked one free online course on SQL and did one lesson each morning before class. In the evenings I applied that day's lesson to our own app, so every hour of study fixed something real. When I got stuck, I posted the exact error on the course forum and usually had an answer by the next day. By day eight I had rebuilt our three main tables, and the app stopped losing saved budgets. We handed it in on time and got the second highest mark in the class. Now when I hit a gap, I set a short deadline and learn by working on the real problem."
Why it scores: It covers the three things the question asks for: how the person spotted the need, the steps they took, and a clear result. It fits experiment and learn fast. About 65 seconds spoken.
How do you prepare for the Vodafone HireVue in three days?
Specific to Vodafone:
- Practise the reasoning game too. It sits in the same online step as the video, so warm up on pattern and sequence puzzles.
- Answer every part. Vodafone's questions often ask two or three things at once. Note each part during the think time and cover them in order.
- Use the practice question. Vodafone suggests it to get used to the format, so test your camera, light, and pacing on it.
For any HireVue:
- Day 1. Write one story per competency in the list above. Two or three sentences each: the situation, what you decided, what happened.
- Day 2. Say each story out loud on a two-minute timer. Most people run long the first time. Cut until each one ends on the result with time to spare.
- Day 3. Run the reported questions cold, in one sitting, no notes. Then set up the room: quiet, camera at eye level, light on your face, wired internet if you have it.
The full setup checklist and a five-day version of this plan are in the free HireVue practice guide.
After you submit, results often take a week or more. Here is how to follow up after an interview if the window passes, and a salary negotiation email for when the offer comes. Applying for a move up where you already work? See promotion interview questions.
