What the Citi HireVue looks like
Citi sends a HireVue link to most early-career applicants once the resume clears. Candidates report 3 to 5 questions with 30 seconds to think and up to 2 minutes to answer. No retakes on the scored questions.
Citi runs on three leadership principles: take ownership, deliver with pride, succeed together. The reported questions line up with those three. This page gives the questions, what each is testing, and one worked answer timed to the window.
| Questions | 3 to 5 |
|---|---|
| Time to think | 30 seconds |
| Time to answer | up to 2 minutes |
| Retakes | none on the scored questions |
| When it comes | after the online application, before assessment centers or live rounds |
| Who gets it | summer analyst, full-time analyst, and early-career programs across banking, markets, and operations |
What candidates report for early-career screens. Citi can change the bank by role and by year.
The clock and the format are the same HireVue product every employer uses. The timing guide covers what happens when the timer runs out, and how HireVue scoring works covers what the recording is scored on.
What Citi is screening for
Citi publishes its leadership principles as take ownership, deliver with pride, and succeed together. Prepare one story for each and you have covered most of the bank.
- Ownership. Something that was not your job that you took on anyway, and finished.
- Delivering under pressure. A deadline you hit, and what you cut to hit it.
- Teamwork. A group result where you name your part honestly.
- Motivation for Citi. A reason specific to Citi's global footprint or the business you applied to.
- Learning speed. A skill you had to pick up fast for a real task.
Build one story for each line above. Every question below is asking for one of them.
Citi HireVue questions candidates report
These are the questions candidates report from recent Citi screens, with the competency each one is built to test. Your set will be a mix of these and close variants.
- Tell me about a time you took ownership of a problem that was not yours. (Ownership)
- Why Citi, and why this business? (Motivation)
- Describe a time you had to learn something new quickly to get a job done. (Learning speed)
- Tell me about a time you worked in a team with people from different backgrounds. (Teamwork, inclusion)
- Describe a time you delivered a result under a tight deadline. (Pressure, prioritization)
- Tell me about a time you made a mistake at work or school. What happened next? (Accountability)
For the shape of each answer type, see HireVue interview questions by format. For the answer structure itself, the STAR method guide has worked examples.
A worked answer, timed to the clock
Question: "Tell me about a time you took ownership of a problem that was not yours."
"At my campus job in the registrar's office, students kept showing up at the wrong window for transcript requests. It was not my desk, but I was the one sending them back across the hall. I counted for a week: about 30 a day. I asked the office manager if I could rewrite the sign and the web page instructions, and she said yes if I did it on my own time. I did both in one evening. The wrong-window count dropped to about five a day within two weeks. It was a small thing. But nobody had owned it, and it was costing an hour of staff time a day."
Why it scores: A problem nobody owned, a measured baseline, permission asked, a fix, and a number after. About 60 seconds spoken.
How to prepare for the Citi HireVue in three days
Specific to Citi:
- Citi is global. If you have any story about working across countries, languages, or time zones, use it.
- Name the business. Citi has banking, markets, services, and wealth tracks with different work. Know which one you applied to and why.
- Keep the ownership story small and real. A small problem you actually fixed beats a big one you only helped with.
For any HireVue:
- Day 1. Write one story per competency in the list above. Two or three sentences each: the situation, what you decided, what happened.
- Day 2. Say each story out loud on a two-minute timer. Most people run long the first time. Cut until each one ends on the result with time to spare.
- Day 3. Run the reported questions cold, in one sitting, no notes. Then set up the room: quiet, camera at eye level, light on your face, wired internet if you have it.
The full setup checklist and a five-day version of this plan are in the main HireVue guide.
