What is the Marriott HireVue interview like?
Marriott uses HireVue for its Voyage leadership development program, and candidates report it for some internships and hotel management roles. Candidates report 3 to 5 questions with 30 seconds to think. Reports on retakes differ. Some candidates had none and some had up to 3 tries per question, so read your invite before you start.
Marriott publishes five core values: put people first, pursue excellence, embrace change, act with integrity, and serve our world. The reported questions ask why you want Marriott, how you handle unhappy customers, and how you lead and work with different people. This page has those questions, what each one tests, and a worked answer.

What does Marriott look for in a HireVue interview?
Marriott's published core values are put people first, pursue excellence, embrace change, act with integrity, and serve our world. The reported questions test put people first most often, through guest and team stories.
- Putting people first. A time you took care of a guest, customer, or coworker in a specific way.
- Leadership. A time you led a group, with what you decided and what changed.
- Working with different people. Solving a problem on a team where people saw things differently.
- Motivation. A reason for Marriott and the program tied to the career you want.
- Composure. Staying calm with an unhappy customer and fixing the problem.

What does a strong Marriott HireVue answer sound like?
Question: "Tell me about a time you worked with a diverse group of people. How did you solve the problems you ran into?"
"In my hospitality program, I was put on a five-person team to plan a real fundraising dinner for a local shelter. Two of us were international students, one worked full time, and two of us had never planned an event. The first problem was meetings. The person who worked full time kept missing them, and the others were starting to resent it. I asked her what times worked, and we moved to short calls at 8 p.m. with notes in a shared doc. The second problem was that the two international students were quiet in meetings, and they had the best ideas for the menu. I started asking each person for one idea before we discussed anything. The dinner sold 120 seats and raised about $4,000. What I took from it is that most team problems come from how people work, and you fix those by asking."
Why it scores: Two concrete problems, a fix for each, a number at the end, and a lesson that fits put people first. About 60 seconds spoken.
How do you prepare for the Marriott HireVue in three days?
Specific to Marriott:
- Read your invite for the retake rule. Reports differ, so plan to get each answer right on the first try.
- Know why the program. Name the hotel area you want to grow in, such as front office, food and beverage, or sales, and say why.
- Have a guest story ready even if you have never worked in a hotel. Restaurant, retail, and campus jobs all count.
For any HireVue:
- Day 1. Write one story per competency in the list above. Two or three sentences each: the situation, what you decided, what happened.
- Day 2. Say each story out loud on a two-minute timer. Most people run long the first time. Cut until each one ends on the result with time to spare.
- Day 3. Run the reported questions cold, in one sitting, no notes. Then set up the room: quiet, camera at eye level, light on your face, wired internet if you have it.
The full setup checklist and a five-day version of this plan are in the free HireVue practice guide.
After you submit, results often take a week or more. Here is how to follow up after an interview if the window passes, and a salary negotiation email for when the offer comes. Applying for a move up where you already work? See promotion interview questions.
