What the JPMorgan Chase HireVue looks like
JPMorgan Chase uses HireVue across most of its campus programs, from investment banking to technology and asset management. Candidates report 3 to 5 questions with about 30 seconds to think and 2 to 3 minutes to answer. No retakes on the scored questions.
The bank publishes its Business Principles, and the questions follow them: client service, teamwork, integrity, and getting things done. This page gives the reported questions, what each is testing, a worked answer, and the two things JPMorgan asks that most banks do not.
| Questions | 3 to 5 |
|---|---|
| Time to think | 30 seconds |
| Time to answer | 2 to 3 minutes |
| Retakes | none on the scored questions |
| When it comes | after the application and the online assessment, before superday |
| Who gets it | summer analyst, full-time analyst, and many early-career tracks across the bank |
What candidates report for early-career screens. JPMorgan Chase can change the bank by role and by year.
The clock and the format are the same HireVue product every employer uses. The timing guide covers what happens when the timer runs out, and how HireVue scoring works covers what the recording is scored on.
What JPMorgan Chase is screening for
JPMorgan's published Business Principles cover exceptional client service, operational excellence, integrity and responsibility, and a great team. The questions are built to see one of those four in a real story.
- Teamwork. A story where the group result mattered more than your credit.
- Client focus. A time you found out what someone actually needed and delivered it.
- Adaptability. A plan that changed under you, and how you kept moving.
- Motivation for JPMorgan. A reason that is specific to this bank and this line of business.
- Integrity. A decision you made the honest way when the easy way was available.
Build one story for each line above. Every question below is asking for one of them.
JPMorgan Chase HireVue questions candidates report
These are the questions candidates report from recent JPMorgan Chase screens, with the competency each one is built to test. Your set will be a mix of these and close variants.
- Tell me about a time you worked with a team to reach a goal. What was your role? (Teamwork)
- Why JPMorgan Chase, and why this line of business? (Motivation, research)
- Describe a time you had to adapt quickly to a change you did not expect. (Adaptability)
- Tell me about a time you went above what was asked to help a customer or teammate. (Client focus, initiative)
- Describe a situation where you had to act with integrity even though it was hard. (Integrity)
- Tell me about a time you failed. What did you learn? (Accountability, learning)
- What do you know about the challenges facing our industry right now? (Awareness, communication)
For the shape of each answer type, see HireVue interview questions by format. For the answer structure itself, the STAR method guide has worked examples.
A worked answer, timed to the clock
Question: "Tell me about a time you worked with a team to reach a goal. What was your role?"
"Last fall I was one of four students on a consulting project for a food bank that wanted to cut its delivery costs. My role was the data. I pulled six months of route logs, found that two of the seven routes carried a third of the miles for a tenth of the food, and built the case for merging them. The hard part was the teammate who owned the driver interviews. He had heard the drivers wanted the routes kept. I asked him to bring the drivers into a working session with the numbers instead of arguing with him about it. They found a version that merged one route and kept the other. The food bank adopted it in January and cut about 15 percent of its monthly miles. My part was the analysis and getting the two sources of truth into the same room."
Why it scores: One clear role, a real disagreement handled without a fight, and a number at the end. About 85 seconds spoken.
How to prepare for the JPMorgan Chase HireVue in three days
Specific to JPMorgan Chase:
- Pick the line of business before you record. JPMorgan asks why this one, and "the bank's reputation" is not an answer.
- Have a client-service story even if you have never had a client. A customer, a patient, a student you tutored all count.
- Watch the clock. The 3-minute window tempts people to fill it. End when the result is stated.
For any HireVue:
- Day 1. Write one story per competency in the list above. Two or three sentences each: the situation, what you decided, what happened.
- Day 2. Say each story out loud on a two-minute timer. Most people run long the first time. Cut until each one ends on the result with time to spare.
- Day 3. Run the reported questions cold, in one sitting, no notes. Then set up the room: quiet, camera at eye level, light on your face, wired internet if you have it.
The full setup checklist and a five-day version of this plan are in the main HireVue guide.
