What is the KKR HireVue interview like?
KKR uses HireVue as the first round for its summer analyst programs. Candidates report 3 to 7 questions, with 1 to 2 minutes to prepare and 2 to 3 minutes to answer. Some candidates got more than one HireVue: one general screen plus one for each group they applied to. Several sources say you get one attempt per question, so read your invite.
The questions mix behavioral and light technical topics. Candidates report "Why KKR?", a setback story, a question about what integrity means to you, and an investment you would make. Business Insider reports that KKR takes fewer than 1 percent of its summer applicants, so a clear, specific answer matters. This page has the reported questions, what each one tests, and a worked answer.
| Questions | 3 to 7, sometimes across more than one HireVue |
|---|---|
| Time to think | 1 to 2 minutes |
| Time to answer | 2 to 3 minutes |
| Retakes | often one attempt per question; check your invite |
| When it comes | after the online application, before Zoom interviews and an in-person superday |
| Who gets it | summer analyst programs, including private equity, real estate, and capital markets teams |

What does KKR look for in a HireVue interview?
KKR lists five values on its site: pursue excellence, earn like and trust every day, stay curious and be creative, work together, and remember people are counting on us. Its co-CEOs describe the culture as "a team sport." The reported integrity and team questions map to trust and working together.
- Motivation for KKR. A reason for KKR and the group, backed by a deal or business you studied.
- Investment judgment. A clear view on why one business is a better investment than another.
- Integrity. What integrity means to you, with a time you acted on it.
- Resilience. A setback, what you did next, and what changed.
- Teamwork. Your part in a group project, named plainly.
Build one story for each line above. Every question below is asking for one of them.

What does a strong KKR HireVue answer sound like?
Question: "Talk about a time you faced a setback."
"Last year I ran the consumer team in my school's student investment fund. I pitched a specialty retailer, and the fund put $8,000 into it, about 6 percent of our portfolio. Three months later the stock fell 35 percent after the company cut its outlook. I had missed that most of its growth came from one product line that was slowing. I did two things. First, I owned it at our next meeting and showed the members where my model was wrong. Second, I changed how our team works. Every pitch now has a page that lists the three things that would prove us wrong, and who checks each one every quarter. We sold half the position and kept the rest with a clear exit rule. Our next two pitches used that page, and one of them caught a risk from a single large customer before we bought. The lesson for me was to turn a mistake into a fixed step in the process."
Why it scores: It owns the mistake with real numbers, shows two clear actions, and ends with a change the team still uses. That maps to KKR's values of pursuing excellence and earning trust. About 60 seconds spoken.
How do you prepare for the KKR HireVue in three days?
Specific to KKR:
- Expect more than one HireVue. Some candidates got a general screen plus one for each group they applied to, so have a specific "why this group" answer for each.
- Have one investment idea ready. Know the business, why it is a good or bad investment, and the main risk.
- Read about recent KKR deals before you record. Business Insider reports that KKR wants candidates to know its recent deals and how the economy affects its businesses.
For any HireVue:
- Day 1. Write one story per competency in the list above. Two or three sentences each: the situation, what you decided, what happened.
- Day 2. Say each story out loud on a two-minute timer. Most people run long the first time. Cut until each one ends on the result with time to spare.
- Day 3. Run the reported questions cold, in one sitting, no notes. Then set up the room: quiet, camera at eye level, light on your face, wired internet if you have it.
The full setup checklist and a five-day version of this plan are in the free HireVue practice guide.
After you submit, results often take a week or more. Here is how to follow up after an interview if the window passes, and a salary negotiation email for when the offer comes. Applying for a move up where you already work? See promotion interview questions.
