What the Bank of America HireVue looks like
Bank of America uses HireVue for many of its campus and early-career pipelines. Candidates report 3 to 5 questions with about 30 seconds to think and up to 2 minutes to answer. Scored questions cannot be re-recorded.
The bank organizes its culture around "responsible growth," and the reported questions favor stories about doing things the right way, working across teams, and client care. This page has the questions, the competency behind each, and a worked answer.
| Questions | 3 to 5 |
|---|---|
| Time to think | 30 seconds |

What candidates report for early-career screens. Bank of America can change the bank by role and by year.
The clock and the format are the same HireVue product every employer uses. The timing guide covers what happens when the timer runs out, and how HireVue scoring works covers what the recording is scored on.
What Bank of America is screening for
Bank of America's stated values are deliver together, act responsibly, realize the power of our people, and trust the team. The reported questions map to "deliver together" and "act responsibly" most often.
- Client care. A time you understood what someone needed before they said it.
- Teamwork across groups. Working with people outside your own team to get a result.
- Responsibility. Doing the careful thing when the fast thing was available.
- Motivation for the bank. A reason tied to a specific business line and its work.
- Resilience. A setback, your response, and what changed.
Build one story for each line above. Every question below is asking for one of them.
Bank of America HireVue questions candidates report
These are the questions candidates report from recent Bank of America screens, with the competency each one is built to test. Your set will be a mix of these and close variants.
- Tell me about a time you worked with people outside your own team to get something done. (Teamwork across groups)
- Why Bank of America, and why this program? (Motivation)
- Describe a time you had to make a careful decision when a faster option was available. (Responsibility, judgment)
- Tell me about a time you helped a customer, client, or classmate who was frustrated. (Client care)
- Describe a setback you faced and how you responded. (Resilience)
- Tell me about a time you had to explain something complex to someone who did not know the topic. (Communication)
For the shape of each answer type, see HireVue interview questions by format. For the answer structure itself, the STAR method guide has worked examples.
A worked answer, timed to the clock
Question: "Tell me about a time you worked with people outside your own team to get something done."
"In my summer role at a credit union I was in the operations group, and the branch staff kept escalating the same account-opening error to us. I asked the branch manager if I could sit at the front desk for two mornings. I watched the tellers enter the form and saw that one field defaulted wrong on the branch screen and right on ours. I wrote it up with screenshots and took it to the systems team, who I had never met. They fixed the default in a week. Escalations on that error went from about 20 a week to zero. My team did not ask me to leave the building for it. But the problem was on the other side of the wall."
Why it scores: Crossing a team line on purpose, a root cause found by watching, and a clean before-and-after. About 65 seconds spoken.
How to prepare for the Bank of America HireVue in three days
Specific to Bank of America:
- Prepare a story about a careful choice. "Act responsibly" is one of the bank's four values and the question comes up.
- If you applied to a consumer or technology track, the client story matters more than the markets story. Match the track.
- Keep the "why" answer specific to a line of business. The bank has many. Pick yours and say why.
For any HireVue:
- Day 1. Write one story per competency in the list above. Two or three sentences each: the situation, what you decided, what happened.
- Day 2. Say each story out loud on a two-minute timer. Most people run long the first time. Cut until each one ends on the result with time to spare.
- Day 3. Run the reported questions cold, in one sitting, no notes. Then set up the room: quiet, camera at eye level, light on your face, wired internet if you have it.
The full setup checklist and a five-day version of this plan are in the main HireVue guide.
