What the Bain & Company HireVue looks like
Many Bain offices use a HireVue video interview between the online test and the first case round. Candidates report 3 to 5 questions with 30 seconds to think and up to 2 minutes to answer. No retakes on the scored questions.
Bain's questions are behavioral, not case. They test the things a case interview cannot: how you work with people, how you take feedback, and whether you can tell a clear story fast. This page lists the reported questions, what each tests, and a worked answer.
| Questions | 3 to 5 |
|---|---|
| Time to think | 30 seconds |
| Time to answer | up to 2 minutes |
| Retakes | none on the scored questions |
| When it comes | after the application and online test, before case interviews |
| Who gets it | associate consultant and summer associate recruiting in many offices |
What candidates report for early-career screens. Bain & Company can change the bank by role and by year.
The clock and the format are the same HireVue product every employer uses. The timing guide covers what happens when the timer runs out, and how HireVue scoring works covers what the recording is scored on.
What Bain & Company is screening for
Bain describes its culture with "a Bainie never lets another Bainie fail" and its operating principles emphasize results, teamwork, and candor. Every reported question is looking for one of those three.
- Impact. A result you drove, with your specific decisions in it.
- Teamwork. Making a team better, especially one that was struggling.
- Coachability. Feedback you took and what changed after.
- Clear communication. A story told in order with the point up front.
- Motivation for consulting and Bain. A reason grounded in the work, not the brand.
Build one story for each line above. Every question below is asking for one of them.
Bain & Company HireVue questions candidates report
These are the questions candidates report from recent Bain & Company screens, with the competency each one is built to test. Your set will be a mix of these and close variants.
- Tell me about a time you had an impact on a team or organization. What did you do? (Impact)
- Why consulting, and why Bain? (Motivation)
- Describe a time you received difficult feedback. What did you change? (Coachability)
- Tell me about a time you led a group through a setback. (Leadership, resilience)
- Describe a time you had to convince someone to change their mind. (Influence)
- Tell me about a time you had to prioritize when everything felt urgent. (Judgment)
For the shape of each answer type, see HireVue interview questions by format. For the answer structure itself, the STAR method guide has worked examples.
A worked answer, timed to the clock
Question: "Describe a time you received difficult feedback. What did you change?"
"In my first month as a teaching assistant, the professor told me my section was the lowest rated in the course. Students said I explained things too fast and did not check whether they followed. That stung, because I thought I was being efficient. I changed two things. I started every section with one problem the students worked on for five minutes before I said anything, so I could see where they were stuck. And I stopped after each concept and asked one person to explain it back. My ratings moved from the bottom of six sections to second by the end of the term. The feedback was right. I was optimizing for covering material instead of for people learning it."
Why it scores: Names the feedback plainly, two specific changes, a measured result, and a sentence that shows the person actually understood the point. About 65 seconds spoken.
How to prepare for the Bain & Company HireVue in three days
Specific to Bain & Company:
- Bain asks about impact more than about roles. State what changed because of you, in a number if you have one.
- Prepare a feedback story where the feedback was right and you changed. Defensive versions score low.
- Say the point of the story in the first sentence. Consultants are trained to lead with the answer, and the screen rewards it.
For any HireVue:
- Day 1. Write one story per competency in the list above. Two or three sentences each: the situation, what you decided, what happened.
- Day 2. Say each story out loud on a two-minute timer. Most people run long the first time. Cut until each one ends on the result with time to spare.
- Day 3. Run the reported questions cold, in one sitting, no notes. Then set up the room: quiet, camera at eye level, light on your face, wired internet if you have it.
The full setup checklist and a five-day version of this plan are in the main HireVue guide.
