Does WIOA pay for forklift certification in Utah?

Yes, when the program is on the Utah Eligible Training Provider List and the job is in demand for your local board. Yes, but usually not on its own. A forklift certification is a one-to-three-day course, and most boards will fund it inside a logistics, warehouse, or supply chain program of two to eight weeks rather than as a standalone training account. The money comes as an Individual Training Account (ITA) that a DWS Employment Center issues and pays straight to the school. WIOA is a grant; you do not pay it back if you finish.

No fixed statewide cap; DWS policy applied by your case manager against your employment plan and the program cost. ITAs combine with Pell and other aid.

OSHA requires the employer to certify each operator on the trucks the employer uses, so a school certificate is a head start rather than a license. Boards know this. The funded shape is a warehouse or logistics certificate that includes forklift, OSHA 10, and a credential such as the MSSC Certified Logistics Associate, which employers on the regional list ask for.

Capstone Workforce's free navigator checks your Utah eligibility door in two minutes, and the $4.99 apply guide lists the forklift programs on the Utah list with the documents the state asks for, so you walk into a DWS Employment Center with the plan already written.

The credentials boards usually fund:

  • Forklift operator certification (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178) (1 to 3 days). Classroom, practical evaluation, and a card. Employers re-certify on their own equipment.
  • Warehouse and logistics certificate (2 to 8 weeks). Forklift plus OSHA 10, inventory systems, and safety. The format boards fund most.
  • MSSC Certified Logistics Associate and Technician (Included in many logistics programs). Industry credential that boards count as an outcome.
  • CDL Class A or B (3 to 7 weeks). The step up in pay. See the CDL guide; many boards fund it after a warehouse start.

No fixed statewide cap; DWS policy applied by your case manager against your employment plan and the program cost. ITAs combine with Pell and other aid. A program that fits inside the cap gets funded in full. One that runs over gets funded up to the cap, with Pell Grants, state aid, or the school covering the rest. Ask for the cap at intake.

forklift license and certification in Utah: what you need

There is no state forklift license. OSHA requires the employer to train and evaluate each operator on the equipment they will use, and to re-evaluate at least every three years or after an accident or a change of equipment. A card from a training provider shows you finished a course; the employer still has to sign off on you for their own trucks.

Utah sets the fee, the renewal cycle and any extra hours through its own board or registry. Your counselor at a DWS Employment Center confirms the current rule at intake, and a program on the state's approved list is built to meet it.

Where you apply in Utah

Utah Department of Workforce Services runs WIOA in Utah. You apply in person at a DWS Employment Center; single state workforce area (grandfathered from the prior federal law): DWS manages all funds and distributes them to its Employment Centers across nine Economic Service Areas, so the rules are the same everywhere.

Registration starts on jobs.utah.gov. Find the nearest center through the state locator at jobs.utah.gov. Commonly three to eight weeks from first appointment to a funded seat.

Who qualifies for a WIOA forklift grant in Utah?

  • Adult program: 18 or older, able to work legally, and signed up for Selective Service if that applies to you. Training money goes first to people on public assistance, people with low income, and people who need basic skills. Veterans and eligible spouses go ahead of others in every program.
  • Dislocated Worker program: laid off or given notice, on unemployment or ran out of it, or formerly self-employed.
  • Youth program: 16 to 24 and out of school, or in school and low income.

You must be 18 to operate a forklift in most workplaces. Many warehouses run a drug screen and a background check. Physical requirements are modest, but the jobs involve lifting and standing for full shifts.

Bring photo ID, your Social Security card, proof you can work, and income or layoff papers. Veterans bring the DD-214.

How to apply for WIOA forklift funding in Utah

  1. Go to jobs.utah.gov/career, select the training support you need, click How to Apply, then Apply Now; the application runs through the same DWS online account used for other department programs. Or walk into any Employment Center.
  2. Register in the DWS job system at jobs.utah.gov.
  3. Meet a case manager for eligibility and the employment plan; DWS can often verify SNAP or TANF status internally.
  4. Choose a program on the Training Provider List and receive the ITA.

At the counselor conversation: Ask whether the board funds a standalone forklift card or only a logistics certificate, which programs are on the ETPL, and whether employers on the regional list hire straight from them.

When you pick the program: Compare which credentials the program ends in (forklift card alone versus MSSC or OSHA 10), the length, the employers that hire graduates, and whether the school offers a CDL step after.

The Utah WIOA guide covers the state's intake in detail, and the national application guide covers the six steps everywhere.

After the card: the warehouse interview

Warehouse interviews are short and about reliability and safety. Supervisors ask about attendance, how you handle a near-miss, and whether you can work a shift pattern. Applicants who answer plainly with an example and who mention safety without being asked get the offer. Rehearse those before you apply.

Frequently asked questions

Does WIOA pay for forklift certification in Utah?

Yes, when the program is on the Utah Eligible Training Provider List and the job is in demand for your local board. No fixed statewide cap; DWS policy applied by your case manager against your employment plan and the program cost. ITAs combine with Pell and other aid. The federal list shows 5 approved forklift programs in Utah. Most programs run 52 to 70 weeks.

How much does forklift training cost in Utah?

Most programs run $100 to $300 standalone; $1,000 to $4,000 for a logistics certificate, and most on the Utah list take 52 to 70 weeks. Exam and license fees: None beyond the course; MSSC exams around $75 each when included. A WIOA training account pays the school directly, and it usually covers the exam fee too.

How much do forklift operators make in Utah?

In Utah, forklift operators earned a median $23.58 an hour in May 2025, about $49,000 a year for full-time work (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).

Will WIOA pay for forklift certification?

Usually inside a logistics or warehouse certificate rather than on its own. The standalone card is one to three days and employers often provide it free.

How much does forklift certification cost?

$100 to $300 standalone. Logistics certificates that include it run $1,000 to $4,000 and fit under every board's cap.

How long does forklift certification take?

One to three days. A warehouse or logistics program that includes it runs two to eight weeks.

How long does approval take?

Plan on three to eight weeks from your first visit to a paid seat. Smaller offices are faster. May and June are slower because the money is spoken for. The biggest delay is a missing paper. Bring everything to the first visit so you do not need a second one.

Can I apply online?

Part of it. You create your account on jobs.utah.gov online. That is step one. But the eligibility decision happens with a case manager at a DWS Employment Center. Bring your papers to that visit.

What documents do I bring?

Bring a photo ID, your Social Security card, and proof you can work in the U.S. Bring pay stubs or a benefits letter. If you were laid off, bring the layoff letter or your unemployment letter. Veterans bring the DD-214. Men born in 1960 or later bring proof they signed up for Selective Service. If you never signed up and are 26 or older, ask the center what proof they accept.

Can I get WIOA more than once?

Sometimes. The law does not set a lifetime limit. Each local board sets its own rule. Some boards allow one training account per person. Some make you wait between two. Some allow a second one if it leads to a better job. Ask your board what its rule is before you pick a program.

Is there a waitlist?

Sometimes, near the end of a funding year. Boards get their money once a year and spend it down. If your board says the money is gone, ask to finish your intake now so you are first when the next money arrives. Ask for that date.

Does it cover LPN / BSN / phlebotomy / CDL?

Yes, when the program is on the Utah list. The federal list shows 11 LPN or LVN programs, 11 BSN programs, 10 phlebotomy programs, 19 CDL programs in Utah, plus 22 CNA programs. A BSN takes four years, and most boards cap how long they fund, so ask before you plan on it. Your board also has to call the job "in demand."
