Does WIOA pay for plumbing school in Virginia?
Yes, when the program is on the Virginia Eligible Training Provider List and the job is in demand for your local board. Yes. Plumber and pipefitter are on the in-demand list of nearly every board, and WIOA pays for the pre-apprenticeship or certificate that gets you into a registered apprenticeship, which then pays you for four to five years with no tuition. Where you apply in Virginia
Virginia Works (Virginia Career Works network) runs WIOA in Virginia. You apply in person at a Virginia Career Works center; regional workforce boards (Northern, Shenandoah Valley, Capital Region, Hampton Roads, and others). In Northern Virginia, orientation and eligibility are coordinated regionally by Fairfax County, and once eligible you can use any center in your region.
Registration starts on Virginia Workforce Connection. Find the nearest center through the state locator at virginiaworks.gov. Several weeks from information session to funded seat; starting the online orientation materials shortens the front end.
Who qualifies for a WIOA plumbing grant in Virginia?
- Adult program: 18 or older, able to work legally, and signed up for Selective Service if that applies to you. Training money goes first to people on public assistance, people with low income, and people who need basic skills. Veterans and eligible spouses go ahead of others in every program.
- Dislocated Worker program: laid off or given notice, on unemployment or ran out of it, or formerly self-employed.
- Youth program: 16 to 24 and out of school, or in school and low income.
Apprenticeships require a high school diploma or GED, a driver's license, an aptitude test, and usually a drug screen. The work is physical: crawlspaces, trenches, and lifting. Ask the pre-apprenticeship which programs it feeds and how many of last year's graduates were accepted.
Bring photo ID, your Social Security card, proof you can work, and income or layoff papers. Veterans bring the DD-214.

Plumbing apprenticeships select through an aptitude test and a panel interview. The panel asks why the trade, how you handle dirty and cold work, what you did the last time you fixed something wrong, and whether you will be on site at 6 a.m. Applicants who answer with a plain story behind each one rank higher. Rehearse that panel before you apply.
