Does WIOA pay for IT support training in North Dakota?
Yes, when the program is on the North Dakota Eligible Training Provider List and the job is in demand for your local board. Yes. Computer user support specialist is on the in-demand list in most regions, and CompTIA A+ and IT support certificate programs are among the most common technology entries on state Eligible Training Provider Lists. The money comes as an Individual Training Account (ITA) that a Job Service North Dakota workforce center issues and pays straight to the school. WIOA is a grant; you do not pay it back if you finish.
No fixed statewide cap; JSND policy applied by the WIOA Advisor against your plan and program cost. JSND’s materials describe help with up to three years of college, individual courses, or specific programs, covering tuition, books, fees, and supplies.
What boards fund is the certification program: A+ (two exams), often with Network+ and the Google IT Support certificate alongside. What they usually will not fund is a long coding bootcamp that is not on the list. If you want IT, ask for the A+ path first; it is the one boards approve most often, and it is the door to the cybersecurity path covered in the cybersecurity guide.

The credentials boards usually fund:
- CompTIA A+ preparation program (8 to 16 weeks). Hardware, operating systems, networking basics, and troubleshooting. Ends in two exams (Core 1 and Core 2). The funded standard.
- Google IT Support Professional Certificate (8 to 24 weeks self-paced). On some state lists through a college partner. Boards count it as a credential when a listed provider delivers it.
- A+ plus Network+ bundle (16 to 24 weeks). Adds the networking certification. The next step up in pay and the on-ramp to Security+.
- IT support associate degree (2 years). Funded by some boards; most cap length, so ask first.

The training-account cap in the first section is the limit. A program that fits inside the cap gets funded in full. One that runs over gets funded up to the cap, with Pell Grants, state aid, or the school covering the rest. Ask for the cap at intake.
IT support license and certification in North Dakota: what you need
No state license exists for IT support work. Employers hire on industry certifications: CompTIA A+ is the usual entry credential, with Network+, Security+ and Google IT Support as common next steps. Certifications are earned by passing vendor exams and most renew every three years through continuing education units or a newer exam.
North Dakota sets the fee, the renewal cycle and any extra hours through its own board or registry. Your counselor at a Job Service North Dakota workforce center confirms the current rule at intake, and a program on the state's approved list is built to meet it.

Who qualifies for a WIOA IT support grant in North Dakota?
- Adult program: 18 or older, able to work legally, and signed up for Selective Service if that applies to you. Training money goes first to people on public assistance, people with low income, and people who need basic skills. Veterans and eligible spouses go ahead of others in every program.
- Dislocated Worker program: laid off or given notice, on unemployment or ran out of it, or formerly self-employed.
- Youth program: 16 to 24 and out of school, or in school and low income.
No prerequisites beyond a high school diploma or GED at most programs. Ask whether the program includes hands-on labs and a help desk practicum, because employers hire for troubleshooting talk, not for the certificate alone.
Bring photo ID, your Social Security card, proof you can work, and income or layoff papers. Veterans bring the DD-214.
How to apply for WIOA IT support funding in North Dakota
- Contact your nearest Job Service workforce center and ask for a WIOA Advisor; that is JSND’s own instruction.
- Complete eligibility and an assessment with the advisor.
- Agree a plan tied to an occupation on the Workforce Development Council’s in-demand list.
- Choose a program from the eligible training provider database and receive the ITA; on-the-job training, job search, and relocation assistance are alternatives when they fit.
At the counselor conversation: Ask which IT support programs are on the ETPL, whether the A+ exam vouchers are included, and whether the board covers a laptop as a supportive service when the program requires one.
When you pick the program: Compare the A+ pass rate, whether both exam vouchers are in the price, lab and practicum hours, and where graduates were hired.
The North Dakota WIOA guide covers the state's intake in detail, and the national application guide covers the six steps everywhere.
After A+: the help desk interview
Help desk hiring runs on a scenario interview: a user cannot print, a laptop will not boot, a customer is angry. Managers listen for a troubleshooting sequence spoken out loud, in order, with the customer handled calmly. Graduates who can do that get offers; the certificate alone does not. Rehearse three scenarios before you apply.
