WIOA Grants for IT Support Training (CompTIA A+) in Hawaii: Eligibility, Cost, and How to Apply

Yes, when the program is on the Hawaii Eligible Training Provider List and the job is in demand for your local board. Yes. Computer user support specialist is on the in-demand list in most regions, and CompTIA A+ and IT support certificate programs are among the most common technology entries on state Eligible Training Provider Lists. The money comes as an Individual Training Account (ITA) that an American Job Center issues and pays straight to the school. WIOA is a grant; you do not pay it back if you finish.

No statewide cap; each county board sets its own. WIOA here can also cover transportation and child care as support services, which matters when the program is on another island.

What boards fund is the certification program: A+ (two exams), often with Network+ and the Google IT Support certificate alongside. What they usually will not fund is a long coding bootcamp that is not on the list. If you want IT, ask for the A+ path first; it is the one boards approve most often, and it is the door to the cybersecurity path covered in the cybersecurity guide.

• CompTIA A+ preparation program (8 to 16 weeks). Hardware, operating systems, networking basics, and troubleshooting. Ends in two exams (Core 1 and Core 2). The funded standard.
• Google IT Support Professional Certificate (8 to 24 weeks self-paced). On some state lists through a college partner. Boards count it as a credential when a listed provider delivers it.
• A+ plus Network+ bundle (16 to 24 weeks). Adds the networking certification. The next step up in pay and the on-ramp to Security+.
• IT support associate degree (2 years). Funded by some boards; most cap length, so ask first.

What the job pays: In Hawaii, IT support specialists earned a median $27.29 an hour in May 2025, about $56,800 a year for full-time work (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).

Certifications are earned by passing vendor exams and most renew every three years through continuing education units or a newer exam.

Hawaii sets the fee, the renewal cycle and any extra hours through its own board or registry. Your counselor at an American Job Center confirms the current rule at intake, and a program on the state's approved list is built to meet it.

Hawaii Department of Labor and Industrial Relations, Workforce Development Division runs WIOA in Hawaii. You apply in person at an American Job Center; four county boards and four centers: Oahu (Dole Cannery, 680 Iwilei Road, Suite 700, Honolulu, 808-768-5701), Hawaii Island (88 Kanoelehua Avenue, Suite A-204, Hilo, 808-935-6527), Maui (110 Alaihi Street, Suite 209, Kahului, 808-270-5777), Kauai (4444 Rice Street, #302, Lihue, 808-274-3056). Your county board sets the cap.

Registration starts on HireNet Hawaii. Find the nearest center through the state locator at labor.hawaii.gov. Commonly three to eight weeks from first appointment to a funded seat.

• Adult program: 18 or older, able to work legally, and signed up for Selective Service if that applies to you. Training money goes first to people on public assistance, people with low income, and people who need basic skills. Veterans and eligible spouses go ahead of others in every program.
• Dislocated Worker program: laid off or given notice, on unemployment or ran out of it, or formerly self-employed.
• Youth program: 16 to 24 and out of school, or in school and low income.

No prerequisites beyond a high school diploma or GED at most programs. Ask whether the program includes hands-on labs and a help desk practicum, because employers hire for troubleshooting talk, not for the certificate alone.

Bring photo ID, your Social Security card, proof you can work, and income or layoff papers. Veterans bring the DD-214.

2. Contact your county’s American Job Center; a case manager helps you apply and gather documents.
3. Complete eligibility and a plan tied to your board’s in-demand list.
4. Choose a program from ETPL Approved Programs in HireNet, confirm whether it is offered on your island or online, and receive the ITA plus any support services.

At the counselor conversation: Ask which IT support programs are on the ETPL, whether the A+ exam vouchers are included, and whether the board covers a laptop as a supportive service when the program requires one.

When you pick the program: Compare the A+ pass rate, whether both exam vouchers are in the price, lab and practicum hours, and where graduates were hired.
