Free Medical Assistant Training: How to Get It Paid For (2026)

WIOA can pay for an approved medical assistant program if you qualify, and some clinics and health systems train new hires on the job. Pick the program by the certification you want, because the CMA exam only takes graduates of accredited programs.

CCMA, CMA or RMA: which one the program leads to

Most states do not require a medical assistant certification, but many employers prefer or require one. The three common ones have different rules about who can take the exam. Check this before you pick a free program, because it decides which doors open later.

CertificationWho gives itHow you qualify for the exam
CCMA (Certified Clinical Medical Assistant)NHAA high school diploma or GED and a medical assistant training program finished in the last 5 years, or 1 year of supervised medical assisting work in the last 3 years (or 2 years in the last 5)
CMA (AAMA)American Association of Medical AssistantsYou must be a student or graduate of a program accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES. The exam fee is $125 for members and $250 for nonmembers
RMA (Registered Medical Assistant)American Medical Technologists (AMT)An accredited program, or 3 years of full-time work in the last 7 years, or a recent military medical training program, among other routes

Eligibility rules from each certifying body's own site, October 2026.

Pick the program by the certification

  • If you want the CMA (AAMA), the program must be accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES. Ask the school to show you the accreditation before you enroll, because some programs do not have it.
  • If you want to start work fast, a shorter training program that prepares you for the CCMA is common, and NHA accepts any medical assistant training program.
  • If you are learning on the job, the CCMA work route opens after 1 year of supervised work, and the RMA work route after 3 years.

How WIOA pays for medical assistant training

When a medical assistant program is on your state's approved training list and the job is in demand where you live, WIOA can pay for it. Clinics hire steadily: the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects about 109,700 openings for medical assistants each year from 2025 to 2035. The training account pays tuition and can cover books, scrubs and the certification exam when they are written into your plan. Here is the short path:

  1. Check that you likely qualify. The WIOA adult program puts people on public assistance, people with low income, and people who need help with basic skills first in line. The dislocated worker program serves people laid off through no fault of their own. Veterans get priority in both. The WIOA eligibility guide has the details.
  2. Check your eligibility and the approved programs near you. The free WIOA Navigator takes about a minute and shows the approved programs near you. The $4.99 funding plan at the top of this page lists every way to get yours paid for.
  3. Book an intake appointment at your American Job Center. Find the nearest one with the CareerOneStop center finder. Bring ID, proof of income or your layoff letter, and the name of the program you want. The what to bring list has the rest.
  4. Get the training account approved, then enroll. The local board pays the school directly. It is a grant, so you do not pay it back when you finish.

Clinics and health systems that train you

Some medical assistants learn on the job, with a doctor or another medical assistant teaching them to take vital signs and work with patients. It can take several months. Some employers also run medical assistant apprenticeships, where you are paid while you learn.

To find them, search job boards for "medical assistant trainee", "medical assistant apprentice" and "will train". Ask large clinics and health systems near you whether they hire into a front desk or patient care role and train into medical assisting.

Another fast way into a clinic is a short program WIOA funds readily, like phlebotomy or CNA. Many medical assistants started there.

Clinics that train on the job post it as an opening. See medical assistant openings near you on Capstone Careers, free to search.

Free medical assistant training by state

The approved programs, the agency that runs WIOA, and the place to apply are different in each state. The WIOA programs by state directory links each state's guide.

The $4.99 funding plan at the top of this page lists every way to get your program paid for, in one place.

When you get the interview, practice with the medical assistant interview questions guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get medical assistant training for free?

Yes. WIOA can pay for an approved program if you qualify, Pell Grants and some state programs cover community college, and some clinics and health systems train new hires on the job.

Often, when the program is on your state's approved training list and medical assistant is an in-demand job where you live. Ask your American Job Center which programs are approved.

Can I become a medical assistant without going to school?

Yes. Some employers train medical assistants on the job. After 1 year of supervised work you can qualify for the NHA CCMA exam, and after 3 years of full-time work for the AMT RMA.

Which medical assistant certification should I get?

The CCMA is the easiest to qualify for. The CMA (AAMA) needs a CAAHEP or ABHES accredited program, so pick an accredited school if you want it. Ask employers near you which one they ask for.

Is free online medical assistant training worth it?

Only if it leads to a certification exam you can take. Clinical skills need hands-on practice, and the CMA needs an accredited program. Check the exam rules before you start.
