Five ways to get phlebotomy training free
Phlebotomy is one of the shortest and cheapest healthcare programs, which makes it one of the easiest to get paid for. These are the main routes.
| Way | What you get | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| WIOA grant | An approved certificate program, usually with the certification exam fee | You must qualify and pick a school from your state's approved list |
| A hospital or lab that trains new hires | A paid job while you learn | Fewer openings, and they fill fast |
| A plasma center | Paid on-the-job training as a plasma center technician | The training fits plasma work. A national certification is a separate exam |
| Job Corps | Free certified phlebotomy technician training at some centers, with housing and meals | Ages 16 to 24 with low income |
| College grants (Pell, Workforce Pell) | A grant for an approved college program | Workforce Pell needs at least 150 clock hours over at least 8 weeks |

How WIOA pays for phlebotomy training
Boards like phlebotomy because a training account of $1,000 to $3,000 can lead to a credential and a job in under three months. Many fund it inside a patient care technician bundle with EKG or CNA, which takes 8 to 20 weeks and qualifies you for more hospital jobs. If you want only the short course, say so at intake. The WIOA phlebotomy guide has the full detail. Here is the short path:
- Check that you likely qualify. The WIOA adult program puts people on public assistance, people with low income, and people who need help with basic skills first in line. The dislocated worker program serves people laid off through no fault of their own. Veterans get priority in both. The WIOA eligibility guide has the details.
- Check your eligibility and the approved programs near you. The free WIOA Navigator takes about a minute and shows the approved programs near you. The $4.99 funding plan at the top of this page lists every way to get yours paid for.
- Book an intake appointment at your American Job Center. Find the nearest one with the CareerOneStop center finder. Bring ID, proof of income or your layoff letter, and the name of the program you want. The what to bring list has the rest.
- Get the training account approved, then enroll. The local board pays the school directly. It is a grant, so you do not pay it back when you finish.

Hospitals, labs and plasma centers that train you
Some employers hire people with no medical background and teach them to draw blood. They are worth a call before you pay any school.
- Hospitals and health systems. Some train and hire phlebotomists in one step. Call human resources and ask about a phlebotomy trainee or patient care technician trainee job.
- Plasma centers. These hire entry-level technicians and train them on the job. BioLife, for example, hires entry-level phlebotomists and plasma center technicians and says it gives in-depth training.
- Blood centers. Some hire blood collection staff with no experience and train them. Search job boards for "paid phlebotomy training" and "no experience" near your ZIP code.
Know the limit. On-the-job training teaches that employer's work. If you later want a hospital lab job, you may still need a national certification, and most of those exams require a training program or a set amount of work experience.
These employers post the job and the training as one opening. See phlebotomy openings near you on Capstone Careers, free to search.
Certification and state licenses
Most employers ask for one of three national certifications: the NHA Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT), $134; the ASCP Phlebotomy Technician (PBT), $155; or the AMT Registered Phlebotomy Technician (RPT). A free WIOA program should include the exam fee.
California, Louisiana, Nevada and Washington also require a state certification or license. If you live in one of those states, pick a program that covers the state steps too.
Every program ends with a clinical, where you do a set number of supervised blood draws on real people (often 100 venipunctures and 25 skin punctures). That part is always in person. The classroom part can be online in some programs, so a "free online phlebotomy course" can only ever be the first half.
