WIOA Grants for Pharmacy Technician Training in Florida: Eligibility, Cost, and How to Apply

Yes, when the program is on the Florida Eligible Training Provider List and the job is in demand for your local board. Yes. Pharmacy technician programs are on most state Eligible Training Provider Lists and the job is on the in-demand list in nearly every region, because retail chains, hospitals, and mail-order pharmacies all hire. The money comes as an Individual Training Account (ITA) that a CareerSource career center issues and pays straight to the school. WIOA is a grant; you do not pay it back if you finish.

No statewide cap; each of the 21 boards sets its own, and it varies by occupation. The ITA pays tuition, required fees, books, and usually exam vouchers; supportive services are a separate bucket. Get the cap in writing before choosing between providers.

Two things are specific to this field. Most states require pharmacy technicians to register or get licensed with the state board of pharmacy, and the fee for that should go into your plan. And the credential employers ask for is the PTCB CPhT exam, so pick a program that prepares for it and includes the fee.

The federal list shows 27 approved pharmacy technician programs in Florida. Most programs run 26 to 42 weeks, and the best employment result is 85 percent working after the program at Concorde Career Institute- Orlando (Polk).

The credentials boards usually fund:

• Pharmacy technician certificate (8 to 40 weeks). Pharmacy law, calculations, compounding basics, and an externship in a retail or hospital pharmacy. The funded standard.
• PTCB Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) (Exam at the end). The national credential most employers require. The ExCPT from NHA is accepted by some employers and states.
• State registration or license (After the exam). Required in most states; the program should explain the state's steps and the fee.
• Sterile compounding (IV) certificate (4 to 12 weeks add-on). Hospital pharmacies pay more for it. Ask whether the board will fund it as part of the plan.

What the job pays: In Florida, pharmacy technicians earned a median $20.96 an hour in May 2025, about $43,600 a year for full-time work (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).

Most states register or license pharmacy technicians through the state board of pharmacy, and many require a national certification (the PTCB CPhT or the NHA ExCPT) to work. You apply to the board, pass the exam, and clear a background check. Certification renews every two years with 20 hours of continuing education, including pharmacy law and patient safety.

Florida sets the fee, the renewal cycle and any extra hours through its own board or registry. Your counselor at a CareerSource career center confirms the current rule at intake, and a program on the state's approved list is built to meet it.

FloridaCommerce, Division of Workforce Services, with CareerSource Florida as the state board runs WIOA in Florida. You apply in person at a CareerSource career center; 21 regional CareerSource boards (CareerSource South Florida, Broward, Central Florida, Tampa Bay, and 17 others) operating about 100 career centers; your board sets the cap.

Registration starts on Employ Florida. Find the nearest center through the state locator at careersourceflorida.com. Two to six weeks from first appointment to a funded seat; Miami-Dade, Broward, Orlando, and Tampa run higher volume, and May and June run slower everywhere as funds get committed.

• Adult program: 18 or older, able to work legally, and signed up for Selective Service if that applies to you. Training money goes first to people on public assistance, people with low income, and people who need basic skills. Veterans and eligible spouses go ahead of others in every program.
• Dislocated Worker program: laid off or given notice, on unemployment or ran out of it, or formerly self-employed.
• Youth program: 16 to 24 and out of school, or in school and low income.

Every state board of pharmacy runs a background check, and drug-related convictions can block registration even when WIOA funds the training. Ask the school and your counselor about the state's rules before intake. A high school diploma or GED is required.

Bring photo ID, your Social Security card, proof you can work, and income or layoff papers. Veterans bring the DD-214.

1. Register in Employ Florida and complete the profile.
2. Find your regional CareerSource office and book intake; many Florida boards run a short reading and math assessment at or right after intake.
3. State your goal as an outcome at the counselor conversation and ask for the board’s ITA maximum and supportive services in the same visit.
4. Complete the Individual Employment Plan, choose a program on the ETPL, and receive the ITA.

At the counselor conversation: Ask which pharmacy technician programs are on the ETPL, whether they prepare for the PTCB exam, and whether the exam and state registration fees are covered as supportive services.

When you pick the program: Compare the externship site (hospital versus retail), the PTCB pass rate, whether the exam fee is in the price, and whether sterile compounding is included.

Pharmacy managers hire for accuracy and calm at a busy counter.
