Does WIOA pay for CDL school in Florida?
Yes, when the program is on the Florida Eligible Training Provider List and the job is in demand for your local board. CDL training is one of the most common programs WIOA pays for. Truck driving is on nearly every in-demand job list, Class A programs run three to eight weeks, and the license leads straight to a job with a wage record the program can check. The money comes as an Individual Training Account (ITA) that a CareerSource career center issues and pays straight to the school. WIOA is a grant; you do not pay it back if you finish.
No statewide cap; each of the 21 boards sets its own, and it varies by occupation. The ITA pays tuition, required fees, books, and usually exam vouchers; supportive services are a separate bucket. Get the cap in writing before choosing between providers.
The training account usually covers full tuition at an approved school, plus the DOT physical, the drug screen, the commercial learner's permit and the skills test fees. Boards pay for the class that matches an in-demand job in the regional plan: Class A where tractor-trailer drivers are listed, Class B where transit, school bus or local delivery is.
Capstone Workforce's free navigator checks your Florida eligibility door in two minutes, and the $4.99 apply guide lists the CDL programs on the Florida list with the documents the state asks for, so you walk into a CareerSource career center with the plan already written.
Which CDL programs do Florida boards pay for?
The federal list shows 110 approved CDL programs in Florida. Among the 30 with the best results, most programs run 4 to 5 weeks, and the best employment result is 100 percent working after the program at 160 Driving Academy - Jacksonville.
| School and program | City | Length | Working after |
|---|---|---|---|
| 160 Driving Academy - JacksonvilleClass A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Traini… | Jacksonville | 4 weeks | 100% |
| FleetForce Truck Driving School*Class B CDL License Certification | Winter Haven | 4 weeks | 100% |
| Treasure Coast Technical CollegeCDL Class B | Vero Beach | 12 weeks | 100% |
From the federal Eligible Training Provider data (U.S. Department of Labor, September 2026). "Working after" is the share employed in the second quarter after leaving, shown when at least 10 people finished. Ask the school for its price in writing, and confirm the program with your counselor before you enroll.
The credentials boards usually fund:
- Class A CDL (tractor-trailer) (3 to 8 weeks). The license boards fund most and the widest hiring pool. You must be 21 to drive across state lines.
- Class B CDL (straight trucks, buses, local delivery) (2 to 4 weeks). The route into transit, school bus, waste and local delivery jobs. Some boards prefer it for people who need to stay local.
- Endorsements (hazmat, tanker, doubles and triples, passenger) (Added after the license). Ask whether the training account covers endorsement testing.
Florida's ETPL is searched through your regional CareerSource office and inside Employ Florida; each of the 21 boards approves against its own in-demand list. The Florida ETPL guide covers the list itself, and the national CDL guide covers what boards pay for everywhere.

| What the training account covers | Tuition and fees paid to the school, plus the DOT physical, the drug screen, the learner's permit and the skills test when they are written into your plan. |
| Exam and license fees | the DOT physical (about $100 to $150), plus the learner's permit, skills test and license fees your state sets |
Ranges are typical for programs on state Eligible Training Provider Lists in 2026. Your board's cap and the school's price sheet decide the exact number.
What the job pays: In Florida, heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers earned a median $24.34 an hour in May 2025, about $50,600 a year for full-time work (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).
The training-account cap in the first section is the limit. A program that fits inside the cap gets funded in full. One that runs over gets funded up to the cap, with Pell Grants, state aid, or the school covering the rest. Ask for the cap at intake.
CDL license and certification in Florida: what you need
A commercial driver's license comes from the state driver licensing agency. Since February 2022, first-time Class A and Class B applicants must finish entry-level driver training from a provider on the federal Training Provider Registry before taking the skills test. You hold a commercial learner's permit for at least 14 days, pass the knowledge tests, then the three-part skills test. A DOT medical card is required and renews every two years; the license itself renews on the state's cycle.
Florida sets the fee, the renewal cycle and any extra hours through its own board or registry. Your counselor at a CareerSource career center confirms the current rule at intake, and a program on the state's approved list is built to meet it.

The counselor's first question is usually this one: "Why CDL, and how will you get to class every day for the length of the program?" Your answer at that appointment decides your funding. Who qualifies for a WIOA CDL grant in Florida?
- Adult program: 18 or older, able to work legally, and signed up for Selective Service if that applies to you. Training money goes first to people on public assistance, people with low income, and people who need basic skills. Veterans and eligible spouses go ahead of others in every program.
- Dislocated Worker program: laid off or given notice, on unemployment or ran out of it, or formerly self-employed.
- Youth program: 16 to 24 and out of school, or in school and low income.
You must pass the DOT physical and a drug screen, and your driving record has to be clean enough for the carriers the school places with. You must be 21 to drive across state lines, which most Class A jobs require. Ask the school about the record rules before you spend weeks on intake.
Bring photo ID, your Social Security card, proof you can work, and income or layoff papers. Veterans bring the DD-214.
How to apply for WIOA CDL funding in Florida
- Register in Employ Florida and complete the profile.
- Find your regional CareerSource office and book intake; many Florida boards run a short reading and math assessment at or right after intake.
- State your goal as an outcome at the counselor conversation and ask for the board’s ITA maximum and supportive services in the same visit.
- Complete the Individual Employment Plan, choose a program on the ETPL, and receive the ITA.
At the counselor conversation: Ask whether CDL is an approved in-demand job for your region, which CDL schools are on the list, and whether training money is available this quarter. Many boards ask you to pass the permit knowledge test first.
When you pick the program: Compare Class A against Class B, behind-the-wheel hours, the school's pass rate on the skills test, the share of graduates working after, and which carriers hire from it.
The Florida WIOA guide covers the state's intake in detail, and the national application guide covers the six steps everywhere.
After the license: the carrier interview
Most CDL graduates interview with two or three carriers before the first seat. Recruiters ask about your driving record, gaps in your work history, why trucking, how you handle long hauls, and safety calls you have made. Drivers who answer with a specific example get the seat, and placement in the second quarter after exit is the number your WIOA program is measured on.
Florida's CDL age rules, permit wait, fees and skills test are on the Florida CDL requirements page, with a free practice test.
