WIOA Grants for Automotive Technician Training in South Dakota: Eligibility, Cost, and How to Apply

Yes, when the program is on the South Dakota Eligible Training Provider List and the job is in demand for your local board. Yes. Automotive service technician is on the in-demand list in most regions, and automotive technology certificates at community colleges and technical schools are common entries on state Eligible Training Provider Lists. The money comes as an Individual Training Account (ITA) that a Job Service office issues and pays straight to the school. WIOA is a grant; you do not pay it back if you finish.

The cost driver is tools. Automotive programs require a starter tool set that runs $1,500 to $4,000, and most boards will cover it as a supportive service when the school's required list is in your plan. The other decision is length: community college certificates fit most boards' caps, while the long private programs often do not.

The federal list shows 17 approved automotive programs in South Dakota. Most programs run 64 to 68 weeks, and the best employment result is 20 percent working after the program at Lake Area Technical College.

The credentials boards usually fund:

• Automotive technology certificate (16 to 52 weeks). Brakes, steering and suspension, electrical, engine performance, and often a manufacturer track. The funded standard.
• ASE certifications (A1 through A8) (Exams after two years of experience or one year plus training). The industry credential. The program should prepare for the exams and boards often cover the fees.
• Diesel technology certificate (24 to 52 weeks). Higher pay; funded where trucking and fleet employers are on the regional list.
• Automotive associate degree (2 years). Manufacturer-sponsored programs (Toyota T-TEN, Ford ASSET, GM ASEP) pay best. Funded where the board allows the length.

What the job pays: In South Dakota, auto technicians earned a median $24.60 an hour in May 2025, about $51,200 a year for full-time work (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).

One that runs over gets funded up to the cap, with Pell Grants, state aid, or the school covering the rest. Ask for the cap at intake.

No state licenses auto technicians, with a few exceptions for emissions or safety inspections. Employers hire on ASE certifications, earned by passing the exam for each area (brakes, engine repair, electrical, and so on) and showing two years of hands-on experience, or one year plus a training program. ASE certifications renew every five years by retest.

South Dakota sets the fee, the renewal cycle and any extra hours through its own board or registry. Your counselor at a Job Service office confirms the current rule at intake, and a program on the state's approved list is built to meet it.

South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation runs WIOA in South Dakota. You apply in person at a Job Service office; single state workforce area; DLR runs WIOA, unemployment, and the Job Service offices, so the rules are the same in Sioux Falls, Rapid City, Aberdeen, Watertown, and the other centers.

Registration starts on SDWORKS. Find the nearest center through the state locator at dlr.sd.gov. Commonly three to eight weeks from first appointment to a funded seat.

• Adult program: 18 or older, able to work legally, and signed up for Selective Service if that applies to you. Training money goes first to people on public assistance, people with low income, and people who need basic skills. Veterans and eligible spouses go ahead of others in every program.
• Dislocated Worker program: laid off or given notice, on unemployment or ran out of it, or formerly self-employed.
• Youth program: 16 to 24 and out of school, or in school and low income.

Programs require a high school diploma or GED and a driver's license, and dealership jobs require a clean driving record and often a drug screen. The work involves lifting and standing for full shifts. Ask the school about the tool list and whether the tools are yours to keep.

Bring photo ID, your Social Security card, proof you can work, and income or layoff papers. Veterans bring the DD-214. South Dakota also asks for: fafsa confirmation and the school’s financial aid award letter; assessment scores (workkeys, tabe, accuplacer, act, or an industry pre-test).

1. Register on SDWORKS; your case file and training request live there.
2. Contact your Job Service office and complete the interview, assessment, and employment plan. The assessment must show reading and math readiness (WorkKeys against the ACT profile, TABE, Accuplacer, ACT, or an industry pre-test such as TEAS, HESI, or a CDL permit).
3. File the FAFSA and get the school’s Financial Aid Award Letter; DLR requires both before funding.
4. Submit the Occupational Skills Training Request (Form 7). Enroll full time, plan to finish within two years, and keep a 2.0 GPA for later semesters. Apply before you enroll; DLR does not normally fund someone who already started.

At the counselor conversation: Ask which automotive programs are on the ETPL, whether the board covers the tool set and ASE fees as supportive services, and whether manufacturer-sponsored programs near you are on the list.

When you pick the program: Compare hands-on shop hours, whether the tools are included and yours to keep, ASE preparation, manufacturer partnerships, and where last year's graduates were hired.

Dealerships and independent shops hire through a service manager who asks how you diagnose a no-start, what you do when a repair takes longer than quoted, and how you talk to a customer about a bill. Graduates who can walk through a diagnostic sequence out loud and stay plain about money get the offer. Rehearse those three before you apply.
