Three ways to get CDL training free
Class A CDL school costs $3,000 to $10,000 if you pay yourself, and takes 3 to 8 weeks. These are the ways people get it paid for.
| Way | What you pay | What you owe after | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| WIOA grant | Nothing at an approved school. It usually covers the DOT physical, drug screen, permit and skills test too | Nothing, as long as you finish | People who qualify and want to choose their carrier |
| Company-sponsored training | Nothing, or a small fee at some carriers | Drive for that carrier for the set time | People who want a job lined up and can start right away |
| Workforce Pell (from July 1, 2026) | Nothing, if the grant covers the program | Nothing. It is a grant | Students at a college with a CDL program the state has approved |

Free CDL training for the unemployed
If you lost your job through no fault of your own, WIOA's dislocated worker program is built for you. It helps laid-off workers get back to work, and CDL school is one of the programs it pays for most. Adults with low income can also qualify through the WIOA adult program. Truck driving is on nearly every state's in-demand job list, which is why CDL is such an easy approval.
Two gates sit outside WIOA. You must pass the DOT physical, and your driving record has to be clean enough for the carriers your school places with. Ask the school about both before you start intake. Many boards also ask you to pass the permit knowledge test first. Here is the short path:
- Check that you likely qualify. The WIOA adult program puts people on public assistance, people with low income, and people who need help with basic skills first in line. The dislocated worker program serves people laid off through no fault of their own. Veterans get priority in both. The WIOA eligibility guide has the details.
- Check your eligibility and the approved programs near you. The free WIOA Navigator takes about a minute and shows the approved programs near you. The $4.99 funding plan at the top of this page lists every way to get yours paid for.
- Book an intake appointment at your American Job Center. Find the nearest one with the CareerOneStop center finder. Bring ID, proof of income or your layoff letter, and the name of the program you want. The what to bring list has the rest.
- Get the training account approved, then enroll. The local board pays the school directly. It is a grant, so you do not pay it back when you finish.
The full walk-through is in how to apply for WIOA.
The WIOA CDL training guide covers what the grant pays for and Class A versus Class B.
Free CDL training companies: how company-paid training works
Many large carriers pay for CDL school in exchange for a promise to drive for them. These three describe their programs on their own sites (checked October 2026). Terms change, so read the current offer before you sign.
- Prime Inc. You pay a $100 entry fee plus your permit costs. You pay nothing more for training as long as you drive for Prime with your CDL for at least one year. Prime pays for travel to orientation in Springfield, Missouri; Pittston, Pennsylvania; or Salt Lake City, Utah.
- CRST. CRST offers fully sponsored training at an accredited school with an employment commitment, and approval is based on your driving, work and criminal history, not your credit. CRST covers the CDL fees and gives two free meals a day and a $40 weekly stipend during school. You must be 21 or older.
- Werner Enterprises. Werner owns Roadmaster Drivers School, with 23 locations, and works with CDL schools across the country. It offers tuition reimbursement to help pay back the cost of school.
Other carriers run similar programs. Search a carrier's name with "CDL training" and read the terms on its own site, not on a job board.
Company-paid training starts with a job application to the carrier. See CDL openings near you on Capstone Careers, free to search, including carriers that train new drivers.
Read the contract before you sign
Company-paid training is a loan you pay back with your time. Before you sign, get clear answers to these:
- How long you must drive for the carrier, and whether that clock starts when you get your CDL or when you finish training with a trainer.
- What you owe if you quit, are let go, or fail the skills test, and how they collect it.
- What you earn during each phase. Some carriers pay nothing until you have your CDL and lend you money for food during school.
- Whether you will drive solo or as part of a team, and how long you will be on the road before home time.
- Whether the school is on the federal Training Provider Registry. If it is not, your training will not count.
With WIOA, none of these apply. You choose any carrier after you get your license.
The federal training rule every free program must meet
Since February 7, 2022, federal Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) rules apply when you:
- Get a Class A or Class B CDL for the first time
- Upgrade a Class B CDL to a Class A
- Get a school bus, passenger or hazardous materials endorsement for the first time
Your training must come from a provider listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Training Provider Registry. The provider reports that you finished, and only then can you take the skills test. Before you accept any free program, look the school up on the registry.
You will also need a commercial learner's permit, which you hold for at least 14 days before the skills test, and a DOT medical card. You must be 21 to drive across state lines. At 18, most states let you drive only inside the state.
Free CDL training by state
These state pages list the CDL schools on each state's approved training list and the steps to apply for WIOA there. In Texas, for example, WIOA training runs through the Texas Workforce Commission and its local Workforce Solutions offices. For every other state, use the WIOA CDL training guide and the WIOA programs by state directory.
The $4.99 funding plan at the top of this page lists every way to get your program paid for, in one place.

After the license: the carrier interview
Most new drivers talk to two or three carriers before they take a seat. Recruiters ask about your driving record, gaps in your work history, why trucking, and a safety call you made. Drivers who answer with a specific example get the offer. Practice with the CDL driver interview questions guide.
