How Target hires for hourly jobs
- Apply online through Workday: type your information, upload a resume to autofill, reuse a past Target application, or autofill with LinkedIn. A resume is not required but encouraged.
- Some applications ask for work availability or a quick job-skills assessment.
- The recruitment team reviews the application and may contact you, or you may get email updates.
- Interview by phone or virtual meeting, in person, or by recorded video.
- Receive the offer by email (or phone and email with a recruiter) and review it in Workday.
- Acknowledge the offer and complete pre-hire screening (background check; drug screen for certain jobs).
- Target Welcome orientation and onboarding.
| Target | |
|---|---|
| Interview | Phone and virtual live interviews, in-person interviews, or recorded video interviews (HireVue). Recorded interviews take about 30 minutes. You get a practice question that only you can see. You can re-record an answer before you submit, but you cannot take the interview again after you submit it. Target publishes five sample questions and the trait each one assesses, and advises about five minutes per answer. |
| Assessment | Some roles include a quick assessment regarding job-related skills as a step in the application, run by Target's assessment vendor (help link goes to HireVue support). |
| How long it takes | After a recorded video interview, Target says it gets back to you within five business days on average. If it has been more than ten days, Target says to contact your recruiter or the store. Drug screens, when required, must be done within 24 hours of accepting the offer. |
| Pay | Target fact sheet (updated Apr 13, 2026): starting wage range $15 to $24, average hourly wage of frontline team members $18.50. Example: one On-Demand store job posting showed a starting rate of $17.25 an hour (checked October 20, 2026). |
| Background check | Yes. All job offers are contingent on a background check run by Accurate Background after you accept the conditional offer. |
| Drug test | Certain jobs require a drug screen under Target's Drug Free Workplace Policy. You are told at the time of offer, and it must be completed within 24 hours of accepting. |

The interview questions Target publishes
Target publishes these 5 sample questions and the trait each one looks for. Target says the real questions can be different for each job:
- Talk to us about your background, prior work, training or other experiences that have prepared you for this job. (looks for: job knowledge)
- Describe how you work with people who think differently than you do. (looks for: inclusivity)
- Describe a time you were confronted with a problem and had to help find a solution. (looks for: problem-solving skills)
- Describe how you partner and communicate with others to create strong working relationships. (looks for: connection)
- Describe how you make sure your work is impactful or successful. (looks for: drive)
Answer each with a short, true example: what happened, what you did, and how it turned out.
