Write your cover letter free
Fill in the job and a few lines about your experience. Paste the job posting if you have it: the letter then uses the posting's own words wherever your experience matches. Copy the letter, read it once, and change anything that does not sound like you.

What a good cover letter does
A cover letter has three jobs. It names the job you want and the employer. It shows two or three things you have done that fit what the job asks for. And it asks for an interview.
- Name the job in the first sentence, so the reader knows which opening it is for.
- Use real facts: where you worked, what you did, how many people or how many shifts. One specific fact beats three adjectives.
- Match the posting. If the job asks for weekend shifts and you work weekends now, say so.
- Keep it to one page. Most hiring managers read the first paragraph and skim the rest.
- End by asking for a conversation, and make sure your phone and email are on the page.
How to get a better letter from the generator
The letter can only be as specific as what you give it. These four things make the biggest difference.
- Paste the job posting. The letter then names the duties the employer cares about, in their words.
- Give numbers you know: years in the job, residents or customers per shift, a certificate and the year you got it.
- Mention the practical fit: shifts you can work, when you can start, that you live nearby.
- Change one line to sound like you. A letter that sounds like a real person reads better than a perfect one.
Anything you do not type stays out of the letter. If the posting asks for a license you do not have, the letter leaves it out instead of claiming it.
A specific cover letter opening, without making things up
For example, if you have worked the evening shift in a grocery store and the posting asks for dependable evening coverage, you might open with: "I am applying for the evening stock associate role. In my current grocery job, I work evening shifts and keep the shelves stocked for the next morning." That example is illustrative. Use it only if those details are true for you.
Avoid generic lines such as "I am a hard worker" unless you follow them with something you did. The generator can draft the letter, but you should confirm every detail and replace any sentence that does not sound like you.
Cover letter format
A standard cover letter has five parts. The generator writes the middle three; add your contact details at the top when you send it.
| Part | What goes in it | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Header | Your name, phone, email and city. The date. The employer's name if you know it. | 4 to 6 lines |
| Opening | The job you want, where you saw it, and one sentence on why this job. | 2 to 3 sentences |
| Fit | Two or three things you have done that match the posting, with specifics. | 1 or 2 paragraphs |
| Close | Ask for an interview. Say when you are free to talk. | 2 sentences |
| Sign-off | "Sincerely," and your name. | 2 lines |
A cover letter when you are changing careers
If you are moving into a new field, the letter has one more job: connect the work you did before to the new one. Name the new credential or training first, then the habits that carry over, like showing up on time, working with the public, or following safety rules.
See the career change cover letter guide for a full example, and the career change resume guide for the resume that goes with it.
Check these five things before you send it
- The employer's name and the job title are right. A letter sent to the wrong company is the most common mistake.
- Every fact is true. You will be asked about anything in the letter at the interview.
- It fits on one page with your header.
- Your phone number and email are correct.
- It matches your resume: same job titles, same dates.
