Does WIOA pay for dental assistant school in Michigan?
Yes, when the program is on the Michigan Eligible Training Provider List and the job is in demand for your local board. Yes. Dental assistant is on the in-demand list of most local boards, and certificate programs at community colleges and career schools are common entries on state Eligible Training Provider Lists. The money comes as an Individual Training Account (ITA) that a Michigan Works! service center issues and pays straight to the school. WIOA is a grant; you do not pay it back if you finish.

Ask the school for its price in writing, and confirm the program with your counselor before you enroll.
The credentials boards usually fund:
- Dental assistant certificate (10 to 52 weeks). Chairside assisting, infection control, and radiography. The short programs get you working; the long ones add expanded functions.
- State radiography or expanded functions certification (Included or exam only). Most states require a radiography credential to take x-rays. The program should include it.
- DANB Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) (Exam after the program plus experience in some states). The national credential. Required or preferred by employers in about a third of states.
- Associate degree in dental assisting or dental hygiene (2 years). Hygiene pays far more but is rarely funded because of the length and cost; ask before planning on it.

Who qualifies for a WIOA dental assisting grant in Michigan?
- Adult program: 18 or older, able to work legally, and signed up for Selective Service if that applies to you. Training money goes first to people on public assistance, people with low income, and people who need basic skills. Veterans and eligible spouses go ahead of others in every program.
- Dislocated Worker program: laid off or given notice, on unemployment or ran out of it, or formerly self-employed.
- Youth program: 16 to 24 and out of school, or in school and low income.
Programs require a high school diploma or GED and an externship placement, which brings a background check and immunization records. Hepatitis B vaccination is standard. If you have a record, ask the school how its externship sites handle it before intake.
Bring photo ID, your Social Security card, proof you can work, and income or layoff papers. Veterans bring the DD-214.

- Find your Michigan Works! service center through michiganworks.org and book intake.
- Complete the assessment and Individual Employment Plan.

At the counselor conversation: Ask which dental assisting programs are on the ETPL, whether the board funds the short certificate or the full DANB-prep program, and whether the radiography credential is included.
When you pick the program: Compare whether radiography is included, the externship hours and the offices that host them, DANB pass rates if the school reports them, and the price against the board's cap.

After the externship: the office interview
Most dental assistants are hired by a dentist or office manager after a working interview of a few hours. They watch how you set up a tray, talk to a nervous patient, and take direction. Graduates who can describe infection control steps in order and explain how they keep a schedule on track get the working interview. Rehearse those answers out loud before the externship ends.
