How long people have been looking
Among people still unemployed in September 2026, the median time out of work so far was 11.5 weeks. The average was 24.8 weeks, pulled up by people out of work a long time. About 29% had been out less than 5 weeks, and 27% for 27 weeks or more. These numbers count people who are still looking, not how long it took people who found a job.

What may help
- Referrals: about half of U.S. job seekers say a referral was used at some point in their hiring (Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia), and the Fed says referrals help match workers with employers. Tell everyone you know what job you want.
- Tailored applications: in data from one job-search app (Huntr, about 2 million applications from October 2024 to June 2026), applications with a tailored resume were marked as getting an interview 5.71% of the time, against 3.09% without. That is a link, not proof that tailoring caused it.
- Where you apply: among Huntr users from July 2025 to June 2026, applications found through Google had a 7.91% interview rate, against 3.36% for LinkedIn. These are users of one app, and the gap may come from other differences.
- Hourly employers with fast applications: Walmart says it tries to respond to applicants within a week, and Amazon says its hourly application usually takes about 20 minutes.
- When an application did lead to an interview, the median wait was 6 days in Huntr's Q2 2026 data (users of one job-search app). Keep sending new applications while you wait.
