What it takes to become an electrician
Most electricians train in a 4- or 5-year apprenticeship, with about 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training each year. You need a high school diploma or equivalent to start.
Most states require a license, which means passing a test that covers the National Electrical Code.
Electrical work in the military or in construction may shorten the apprenticeship.
