Take the career change quiz

The assessment above starts with four questions about your time, money, schooling, and how much physical work suits you, because those rule jobs in or out fast. Then it asks how much you would like 30 kinds of work, one tap each.

You get the jobs that fit you and your situation, each with the pay, the training length, and openings near you. From any result you can see who is hiring now or open a free plan to get the training, paid for through WIOA.

How to use your result

Treat your top jobs as a short list to check, then pick one.

  • Check the pay and openings for each one in the best career change jobs table.
  • Tap "See jobs near me" on a result to see who is hiring now, or open the free plan to look at the programs near you, how long they take, and when the next class starts.
  • Talk to one person who does the job. Ask what a hard day looks like.
  • Pick the one you can see yourself doing in five years. Then follow the six steps in the career change guide.

If none of the jobs feels right, take it again and answer the time and money questions differently. More time to train opens higher-paying work.

Hands-on trades: HVAC, electrician, welding

Trades fit people who like fixing and building things and do not mind getting dirty. The work is physical and moves between job sites, indoors and out.

  • HVAC technician: programs run 6 months to 2 years, and nearly every technician needs EPA refrigerant certification. Median pay was $61,010 in May 2025, with 11 percent growth projected. HVAC technicians have one of the highest injury rates of any job.
  • Electrician: most learn in a 4- or 5-year paid apprenticeship, with about 2,000 paid hours of training a year. Median pay was $63,190, with 9 percent growth. Most states require a license.
  • Welder: training through a short course or an apprenticeship, then months of on-the-job training. Median pay was $53,750. Many factories run two or three shifts a day.

Patient care: CNA, phlebotomy, medical assistant, LPN, EMT

Patient care fits people who want to help someone directly and are fine with blood and bodies. Hospitals run all day and night, so expect some nights, weekends and holidays.

  • CNA: the shortest start, with at least 75 hours of training under federal rules. Median pay was $42,260. The work is physical: CNAs move patients and have one of the highest injury rates of any job.
  • Phlebotomist: a program of under a year. Median pay was $45,230, with 7 percent growth. You may stand for long periods.
  • Medical assistant: a mix of patient care and office work. Median pay was $45,690, with 13 percent growth, the fastest in this group.
  • LPN: about a year of school and a state license. Median pay was $64,400.
  • EMT: under a year for EMT-Basic. Median pay for EMTs was $44,470. The work is physically demanding and can be stressful, with shifts of 12, 18 or 24 hours at some services.

Office and tech: billing and coding, pharmacy technician, IT support

These fit people who like problem solving, computers and detail, with less lifting.

  • Medical billing and coding: desk work keeping and coding patient records for insurance payments. Median pay for medical records specialists was $51,140, with 8 percent growth. Employers often prefer certification.
  • Pharmacy technician: a program of a year or less, or on-the-job training. Median pay was $45,750. You stand or walk most of the day.
  • IT support: help desk work, often reached through the CompTIA A+ certification. Median pay for computer user support specialists was $61,860. Jobs are projected to shrink 3 percent, but about 48,700 open up each year. Some IT support jobs can be done from home.

Driving and logistics: commercial truck driving

Driving fits people who like being on the move and working alone. Truck driving school at a community college lasts 3 to 6 months, and you need a commercial driver's license (CDL). Median pay was $58,640, and about 214,500 driver jobs open up each year.

Know the lifestyle before you sign up. Long-haul drivers can be away from home for days or weeks. Federal rules limit drivers to 11 hours of driving within a 14-hour workday, and CDL holders must pass a physical exam every two years.

Working with young children

Early childhood work fits people who are patient and like small children. Some states and employers require a credential, and the one states most often ask for is the Child Development Associate (CDA): 120 hours of training, 480 hours of experience with young children, and a $525 application fee.

Median pay for childcare workers was $34,980 in May 2025, and jobs are projected to decline 2 percent. Turnover still opens about 150,300 jobs a year. Pay is lower than the other fields here, so check local wages before you commit.

Frequently asked questions

What career should I switch to?

Start with what kind of work you like, how long you can train before you need a paycheck, and what you need to earn. The assessment on this page uses those answers, plus how much physical work suits you, to show the jobs that fit you.

Is the career change quiz free?

Yes. It takes about 5 minutes, and each result shows openings near you or opens a free plan with approved training.

How accurate is a career quiz?

This one uses the O*NET Interest Profiler from the U.S. Department of Labor, the same interest tool careers counselors use. It narrows the list; it cannot decide for you. Use your top jobs as a short list, then check pay, openings and local programs, and talk to someone who does the job before you pick.

What if I need to earn while I train?

Choose "Right away" when it asks how soon you need to earn. It moves paid-training jobs up, like electrician and HVAC apprenticeships. If you can train for a few months first, you also see short programs like CNA.
